ABOUT E-WASTE

Reverse Garbage Co-Op Ltd collect up to 1000 computers, monitors, scanners printers etc per month and funnel these back into the re-use chain. We collect Apple MACs, Intel based PCs from 486 to Pentium 4, multi processor servers, colour inkjet and lasers, scanners, bar code readers, PABX systems, comms equipment, UPS systems, televisions, component stereos and more.

We are a self funding not for profit and have been leading the recovery of E-Waste as a not for profit activity for the last 5 years. Our clients include large commercial clients, local schools, SMB, Sydney consumers, special interest groups and more recently overseas aid to developing countries shipping container loads of computers. What we can't refurbish, we apply adaptive recycling methodology.

The AIIA (Australian Information Industry Association), CESA, and Govt (state and fed) have been trying to grapple with E-Waste for years. All that they’ve come up with so far are ‘white papers’ and more committees and yet the Australian Bureau of Statistics estimated that Australians dumped 1.6 million items of E-Waste last year into landfill..

The major sticking point is 'white box systems' - no-names. The branded computer industry does not want to be held accountable for these items which our experience leads us to believe make up 50-60% of the disposed items that we see. We urge you to contact the AIIA (http://www.aiia.com.au/i-cms.isp ), your local member and ask the hard questions about E-Waste. Reverse Garbage will take all and any systems irrespective of condition with no fees attached. That is our differentiator to the other 20 or so recycling and re-use facilities listed for E-Waste.

Our adaptive recycling process ensures that those systems that cannot be reused, are disassembled into their individual components and either sold as spare parts or as elements in art. Any metal parts are taken to metal recycling depots. We're doing our bit and have been for quite some time. For the I.T. and electronics industry, it's an issue of cost - they are a for-profit body unlike Reverse Garbage so inevitably, whatever the solution, the cost will be passed onto the consumer.

Some questions that you could ask could be for example why doesn't the industry look into their own raw material and manufacturing processes and design h'ware systems that are less toxic in disposal or can easily be broken back down into individual components for re-use. Alternately, why is business and public marketed to by the I.T. industry in such a way that leads them to believe they need the most current and up to date systems in order to do what they have to do? Most consumers would be able to browse the internet, write a letter, print a photo and complete projects using a Pentium II or III let alone a core duo or quad core system. It's not just the toxicity of E-Waste, it's the life cycle too. It's too short. But then, that's business.
